About the Department

Department of Clinical Nutrition takes pride in playing an important role in promoting improved health through good nutrition. A variety of services to inpatients, outpatients and the surrounding community are continuously offered.

Inpatient Services

Our clinical dietitians conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments for inpatients to identify goals for improving nutritional intake and health. Individualized care plans are designed to meet the patient’s specific medical and lifestyle needs. Patients receive nutrition education as needed. A variety of lectures and programs concerning nutrition wellness and health are provided. Clinical Nutrition Services - The Department of Clinical Nutrition provides nutrition screening, assessment, intervention, and counseling for adult and pediatric inpatients and adult ambulatory patients

The Nutrition Clinic provides medical nutrition therapy:

Cancer Center

Patients undergoing radiation and/or chemotherapy can meet with a dietitian to help optimize their nutritional status. The dietitian also assists patients with dietary strategies to minimize side effects that may occur during cancer therapy.

Community Outreach

The dietitians at are involved in many community programs. Lectures are offered to women’s groups, elder programs, school programs, various support groups and local corporations. Dietitians also participate in many community health fairs for various age groups. Give poster presentation or talks on Special Days like Nutrition Week, Dietetics Day, Children’s Day etc.

Food Services

The Food Services staff works very closely with the dietitians to offer attractive, nutritionally adequate and satisfying menus. Food Services provide meals and snacks for patients, staff, guests and visitors. The staff takes great care to prepare and expedite the appropriate physician-ordered diet order for patients.

Therapeutic diets for patients

Provide Therapeutic diets for the in patients like Diabetic diet, Low Salt, High Protein, Neutropenic etc according to the patient’s condition, likes and dislikes, which help the patients to recover fast. We also are a part of the multidisciplinary team in assessing the patients, identifying the individuals at risk and providing early nutritional intervention which goes a long way in the recovery of the health of the patient.

Celebration of special days in a lot of splendors parked with education with special reference to nutrition, food and health is a regular feature of the department.

About Ms. Susan Itty

About Ms. Susan Itty – Susan Itty is Consultant and Chief Clinical Dietician at Mazumdar Shaw Medical Centre. She has 12years of Experience as a Clinical Dietitian. She has done her training from St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore. She has been with the Mazumdar Shaw Medical Center for the last 10years and has been instrumental in raising the Clinical Nutrition standards of the Hospitals to an appreciably high level of patient rating. She is presently working with diet and diet related health problems like Underweight, Overweight, Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease, Gastric disorders, Cancer, etc. and has counseled thousands about a healthy lifestyle. She believes that age or sex doesn't matter for anyone who wants to be fit and healthy. She loves giving inspirational talks at Corporates, Social Organizations and other places, challenging people to live a healthy and wholesome life.

She is the life time member of Indian Dietetic Association. She has delivered talks to the public on various topics in adult and pediatrics. She has developed many brochures and teaching aids for the patients. She is a columnist for various magazines and news papers. Attended many National and international conferences. She is one of the lecturers for DNB and certificate course students of Narayana Health. She has worked as Lecturer for TTC and Nursing students.

Areas of expertise and interest –

Her area of interest is to design entral nutrition for critically ill patients and to improve their nutritional status and quality of life. She is expertise in Weight management diets, renal diets, in born errors of metabolic diets, cancer diets, transplant diets, gastric disorder diets and entral nutrition.


Has done study on impact of nutritional counseling in dialysis patients to improve their nutritional status and presented in state level Nephrology Association of Karnataka meet. Also presented paper on ‘Nutrition in ICU’ at Critical Care Nutrition workshop


Name :-Dr. Maneesh Jerna A M

Designation :-Senior Clinical dietitian

Qualification :-Masters in food science and nutrition from Pondicherry central university

About Ms. Maneesh Jerna A M – She is working as a Senior Clinical Dietician with Narayana Health - Mazumdar Shaw Medical Centre for the past 4 years. She has completed her Masters in food science and nutrition from Pondicherry central university. She is also a Life time member in IDA (Indian Dietetic Association).

Talk on various topics regarding nutrition in to the general public & health fitness and life style counseling.

About Dr. Umamahewari J

She did M.Sc Food &Nutrition in PSG college of Arts and Science, Coimbatore. She has participated National level seminar" Industry academic synergy to enhance food security through processing value addition held in IICPT, Thanjavur. Wholesome Nutrition: challenges, scope and management conducted in NSI Mumbai. She has participated in Southern Zone competition held in connection with the project ' Reappraisal of Mid day meal in India'. Recommending sustainable region based mid day meal recipes. Presently she is working as a Clinical Dietitian in Narayana Health – Mazumdar Shaw Medical Center, Bangalore. She has given talk on various subjects on Nutrition

Food allergies, Nutritional issues, Eating disorders, Health promotion. Nutritional calculations, Menu analysis, Developing nutritional care plans and Nutrition screenings.

About Dr. Trease Thomas

She is Master in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics from Alphonsa College, Kerala. She had undergone 6 months internship at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore and became Registered Dietician in the year 2009. Later she migrates towards Bangalore and started working as a Clinical Dietician for Narayana Health Hospitals from June 13 2011 to October 4 2013.She then worked with Lourdes Hospital, Cochin for few months and worked with Anjali Mukerjee Health total, Bangalore and rejoined at Mazundar Cancer Centre- Narayana Health from January 2015 till present. She has participated in various conferences. She is a Life Member of Indian Dietetic Association. She is interested in giving talks on Life style Diseases and how to overcome that.

About Dr. Gayathri Rathinakumar

She is working as Clinical Dietitian at Narayana Health - Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center, Bangalore since last 2 years. Worked as Dietitian for 1.5 years with Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore - Tamil Nadu. She is a Post Graduate in Food Science and Nutrition from Avinashilimgam Deemed University for Women, Coimbatore - Tamil Nadu. Undergone certified intensive Dietary training at “Kovai Medical Center Hospital”, Coimbatore - Tamil Nadu. An active participant in 40th Annual Conference of the Endocrine Society of India held at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore-Tamil Nadu.
