About the Department

Pain is the most common and dreaded symptom in cancer patients. The pain department provides holistic care and relief from pain with psychological, spiritual, social and occupational interventions.

Highlights of the Department

  • The department focuses mainly on pain management for both cancer and non-cancer related pain like spine related pain, musculo-skeletal pain, headaches and other pain syndromes. In addition to pharmacological management we also alleviate pain by interventional methods like radiofrequency ablation under fluoroscopy guidance and ultrasound guidance, neurolysis and prolotherapy.
  • Other distresses caused by cancer related treatments like vomiting, nausea, and fatigue are also addressed effectively. Patients on cancer treatment are seen and re-evaluated on regular basis. In addition to symptomatic relief, respite care and end-of-life care are also provided in this department.
  • Pre-treatment counselling is done for all the patients who are scheduled to undergo cancer treatment. Additionally, individual and family counselling is provided when required.
  • Non-physical distress like psycho-social issues, is dealt by experts such as clinical psychologists. Addiction problems like tobacco/alcohol and other substances is handled by deaddiction experts are Mucositis Clinic, Lymphedema and Stoma Clinic remains open on all week days from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. This department has a prime role in Integrative Oncology.

About Dr. Praveena Gayathri

Dr. Praveena Gayathri is a full-time Consultant in the Pain and Palliative Department at the Mazumdar Shaw Medical Center, Narayana Health City, Bangalore. She provides pre-treatment counselling, management of treatment related side effects, symptom control and terminal care, in addition to pain relief cancer and non-cancer pains. She is also in charge of nutrition and rehabilitation for cancer patients. Her future plans include various research programmes in the field of Pain and Palliative Medicine, and to start various teaching programmes for doctors and nursing staff. Dr. Gayathri works closely with the newly launched Integrative Oncology division to devise holistic and customised patient management approaches.

About Dr. Nagaraju Morubagal

Dr. Morubagal is a Consultant in Pain and Palliative Medicine at Narayana Health City, Bangalore. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, Ireland and received his DA from NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. He has numerous national and international publications to his credit and has received the best poster award at American Neuromodulation Society.
